History of Father's Day
# The History of Father’s Day: How It Started and Why We Celebrate It

Family is the heart of every home. In Southwest Florida, we see it every day. Dads teaching kids to cast a line. Grandfathers sharing stories on a shaded lanai. It’s a lifestyle built on connection. But have you ever wondered how we ended up with a special day just for the guys?
The story of Father’s Day isn't just about neckties and BBQ grills. It’s a story of grit, gratitude, and a daughter’s love for a veteran who did it all. At Veterans Realty, Inc., we value the service and sacrifice of our military families. Knowing that Father’s Day has its roots in the life of a Civil War veteran makes it even more special to us.

## A Daughter’s Vision: The Inspiration of Sonora Smart Dodd
Most people know about Mother’s Day. It became official in 1914. But the road for dads was much longer. The spark for Father’s Day came from Sonora Smart Dodd. In 1909, she sat in a church in Spokane, Washington, listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. As she listened, her mind turned to her own father, William Jackson Smart.
William wasn't just any dad. He was a Civil War veteran. Even more remarkably, he was a single father. After his wife died in childbirth, William raised Sonora and her five siblings alone on a farm in eastern Washington. He was a man of strength. He was a man of tenderness. Sonora felt that fathers like hers deserved the same honor as mothers.

Sonora wanted to celebrate her father’s birthday, June 5th. She took her idea to local ministers and the YMCA. They loved it, but they needed time to prepare their sermons. They moved the date to the third Sunday in June.
## The First Celebration: Spokane, 1910
On June 19, 1910, the very first Father’s Day took place in Spokane. It was a community-wide event. The mayor of Spokane and the governor of Washington both issued proclamations. People wore roses to honor their fathers: red roses for the living and white roses for those who had passed.

The event was a success. Word spread. However, unlike Mother’s Day, which was embraced almost immediately, Father’s Day faced an uphill battle. Some men were skeptical. They felt the holiday was a bit too sentimental. Others worried it was just a way for retailers to sell more products. Sound familiar?
## The Long Road to National Recognition
Despite the slow start, the idea didn't fade away. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak at a Father’s Day celebration. He loved the idea but couldn't get Congress to make it official. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that the holiday be observed by the nation to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children."
Still, no official law was signed.
Decades passed. During the Great Depression, retailers pushed the holiday to help boost sales of men’s clothing and tobacco. During World War II, Father’s Day became a way to honor the troops serving overseas. It became a symbol of American resolve and family unity.
Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. But it wasn't until 1972: six decades after Sonora’s first event: that President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
## Why We Celebrate Today
Today, Father’s Day is about more than just history. It’s about the bond. It’s about recognizing the men who show up every day. In our corner of Florida, that often means enjoying the simple things.
